Shahrzad Atai: Bridging Jurisdictions, Cultures, and Generations in Global Law

In the intricate world of international law, where cultures converge and regulations shift at speed, few professionals embody resilience, adaptability, and global fluency quite like Shahrzad Atai, Partner at Seddons GSC LLP. Her journey is not merely a professional ascent through prestigious roles and international recognitions. It is a story of courage, reinvention, and unwavering dedication to clients across borders.

From her early days in Iran to leading international client portfolios in London’s competitive legal market, Shahrzad’s career reflects the evolving face of modern legal leadership. It is a journey marked by determination, cultural dexterity, and a commitment to excellence that continues to shape her influence today.

Roots in Law, Built on Family Foundations

Shahrzad’s introduction to law was both personal and profound. Her father was her role model and inspired her to follow a legal career. As a university student in Iran, she began working as a paralegal in her father’s law firm, Atai & Associates Attorneys at Law. Immersed in the daily rhythms of legal practice, she discovered more than just procedural knowledge; she discovered purpose.

Her decision to move to London was bold. Transitioning to a new country, culture, and legal system required both courage and clarity of vision. She completed her LLB at the University of Hertfordshire, followed by the Legal Practice Course and a Master’s degree. Securing a training contract at a small high street firm, she found herself mentored by a remarkable female lawyer who remains a source of inspiration to this day.

It was during her second year of study that she faced an unexpected and deeply personal revelation. A tutor gently suggested she reconsiders whether law was the right path, noting that the profession demands extensive reading, writing, and drafting. That moment led to a life-changing discovery: Shahrzad learned she was heavily dyslexic. Suddenly, the struggles she was quietly facing for years made sense. Reading and writing had always required extraordinary effort. But for her, stepping away from the law was never an option. Rather than viewing dyslexia as a limitation, she chose to see it as a challenge to rise above, strengthening her discipline, sharpening her analytical skills, and reinforcing her resolve to succeed.

Qualifying as an English solicitor marked a defining chapter. Yet it was only the beginning.

Rising Through the Ranks of International Law

In January 2011, Shahrzad secured her first post-qualified position at a boutique City firm, working alongside exceptional mentors who refined her legal precision and strategic thinking. In a couple of years, her expertise had already gained international recognition when she became General Counsel for a Kuwaiti family office navigating complex restructuring.

Her career trajectory accelerated further when she joined a Mayfair law firm and founded its Middle East Desk. For nearly five years, she built and led this division, establishing herself as a trusted advisor for high-net-worth individuals and international families.

In October 2019, she was headhunted by a multifamily office investment bank to serve as Managing Director. At that juncture, she felt the pull to explore something new, perhaps even step away from traditional legal practice. Yet the bond she had built with her clients proved powerful. They continued seeking her counsel, reaffirming her identity not merely as a lawyer, but as a trusted confidante.

After 15 months she was asked to return to the Mayfair lawfirm as Partner and Head of International Clients. In April 2024, she rejoined GSC Solicitors, and following its merger with Seddons in April 2025, the firm emerged as Seddons GSC LLP. The merger has strengthened the firm’s capacity to operate as a comprehensive one-stop legal solution for global clients.

Her consistent excellence has earned her numerous international awards, including recognition as a Top Recommended Advisor by Spears 500 every year since 2023.

Specialising at the Intersection of Private Client and Corporate Law

Shahrzad’s expertise sits at the sophisticated crossroads of private client advisory and corporate structuring. With a strong corporate background, she advises clients on structuring, development strategies, Sharia finance, and financial sanctions relating to Iran. Examples of her clients are governments, family offices, businesses and private individuals in the Middle East and Europe.

Her multilingual capabilities, commercial acumen and cultural fluency enable her to navigate complex international matters with nuance. While her client base spans multiple jurisdictions, a significant proportion originates from the MENA region, where understanding both legal frameworks and cultural expectations is essential.

This dual competency, legal rigor combined with cultural intelligence, distinguishes her practice.

Overcoming Early Challenges with Resolve

The early years of her legal career were anything but easy. She started as a trainee solicitor in 2010. Shahrzad was also a single mother raising a toddler. Balancing demanding legal training with parental responsibilities required extraordinary resilience.

For women in law, the challenges can be amplified. Being young, female, foreign, and working in a second language added additional layers of complexity. Yet she refused to allow circumstance to dictate her trajectory.

A defining milestone came a decade later. By 2021, she was a partner advising governments, royal family members, ultra-high-net-worth/high-net-worth clients and was earning ten times more than at the start of her career. That transformation symbolised more than financial success; it represented perseverance, growth, and the power of relentless effort.

Leadership Through Mentorship and Delegation

Within an international legal team, leadership demands clarity, empathy, and discipline. Shahrzad credits much of her leadership philosophy to the mentors who shaped her path. She strives to replicate that generosity with junior colleagues, offering guidance and encouraging professional growth.

She also understands the importance of delegation. By entrusting capable team members with responsibility, she frees herself to focus on more complicated matters and business development while empowering the next generation of lawyers.

Approachability remains central to her leadership style. She believes clients deserve direct access to decision-makers. At Seddons GSC, partners ensure availability, and their clients all have their personal mobile number. In an industry often characterised by layers of assistants and intermediaries, this accessibility fosters trust and continuity.

Navigating a Complex Global Legal Landscape

International law today is shaped by intensifying regulatory scrutiny. Due diligence and compliance requirements vary dramatically between jurisdictions, creating intricate challenges for global clients. Differences in documentation styles, reporting frameworks, and cultural norms require meticulous attention.

Managing expectations across cultures is equally critical. Sensitivity to tradition, communication styles, and business etiquette can significantly impact outcomes. Shahrzad’s international upbringing and linguistic skills provide a natural advantage in this domain. She speaks English, Persian, French, Italian, Turkish, Azerbaijani and basic Arabic.

Staying ahead in such an environment demands continuous learning. The past two years alone have introduced substantial regulatory changes in the United Kingdom, particularly in tax law. Through seminars, webinars, conferences, and rigorous case law review and discussions with colleagues, she ensures her advice remains current and precise.

Innovation Without Compromising Confidentiality

While legal practice remains deeply rooted in tradition, technology has reshaped its operational dynamics. Shahrzad embraces innovation where it enhances service quality. Virtual meetings via Microsoft Teams reduce travel burdens for international clients. Electronic file management systems minimise physical paperwork and streamline efficiency. Dictation tools and legal software enhance productivity and accuracy.

However, she remains cautious about artificial intelligence. In a profession governed by confidentiality and data protection, lawyers cannot freely upload sensitive documents to public AI platforms, but there are specific AI softwares which are available for the legal industry. While she anticipates AI playing a more colourful and influential role in the next five to ten years, she emphasises responsible integration aligned with regulatory frameworks.

Diversity as Strategic Strength

Diversity within Seddons GSC is not merely symbolic; it is functional. A multilingual team capable of serving clients in their native languages enhances accessibility and trust. Even when international clients speak excellent English, the comfort of communicating in their first language can be invaluable.

Shahrzad views diversity as a competitive advantage. It strengthens cultural understanding, expands global reach, and positions the firm as genuinely international rather than superficially global.

Advice for the Next Generation

For young lawyers aspiring to international careers, Shahrzad’s advice is clear. Learn at least one additional language. Global law is not confined to domestic frameworks, and linguistic ability broadens opportunity exponentially.

She also emphasises realism. International legal practice is not a standard nine-to-five occupation. Time zone differences require flexibility, long hours, and sustained commitment. Passion for the profession must underpin endurance.

The Future of Law

Looking ahead, Shahrzad anticipates significant technological transformation, particularly through artificial intelligence. Yet she believes human judgment, discretion, and relationship-building will remain irreplaceable. Law is ultimately about trust.

Her career stands as proof of that principle. From a trainee solicitor to an internationally recognised partner, her trajectory illustrates what becomes possible when expertise, resilience, and integrity converge.

In an era defined by rapid change and global complexity, Shahrzad Atai exemplifies the modern international lawyer: culturally fluent, technologically adaptive, strategically astute, and profoundly client-centric.

Her story is not only one of professional success. It is a testament to the enduring power of perseverance, mentorship, and the belief that no barrier, be it geography, language, or circumstance, is insurmountable when driven by purpose.

As Seddons GSC continues to expand its international footprint, Shahrzad remains at the forefront, bridging jurisdictions, guiding governments, families and businesses, and shaping the future of cross-border legal advisory.

In the global legal arena, she is not simply practicing law. She is redefining what it means to lead within it.
